10 Reasons You May Have Blurred Vision

Blurry vision has become the most common eyesight problem! An issue with any eyes components, such as the cornea, retina, or optic nerve, can cause sudden blurred vision in one eye.

Long-term medical conditions usually cause gradually progressive blurred vision. A single event most often causes sudden blurring.

Although multiple reasons can lead to such symptoms, some of the common reasons for sudden blurred vision are as follows:

  1. Detached Retina
  2. Stroke
  3. Wet Macular Degeneration
  4. Transient Ischemic Attack
  5. Angle Closure Glaucoma
  6. Eye Strain
  7. Conjunctivitis
  8. Corneal Abrasion
  9. Hyphema
  10. High Blood Sugar

Conditions needing immediate assessment and treatment:

Some of the causes of sudden blurry vision are medical emergencies that must treat as soon as possible to avoid permanent vision damage and loss.

1. Detached Retina

A detached retina is a hazardous condition that happens when the retina tears away from the rear of the eye and loses its blood and nerve supply.

When it happens, you see flashing lights and black flecks followed by an area of blurred or absent vision. Without emergency treatment, one can permanently lose vision in this area.

2. Stroke

Unexpected blurred and lost vision in both eyes can occur when you experience a stroke affecting the part of the brain that controls vision. A stroke affecting your eye causes blurred or lost vision in only one eye.

You may have other symptoms of a stroke, such as weakness on one side of your body or the inability to speak.

3. Wet Macular Degeneration

The centre of your retina is called the macula. Abnormal vessels may grow, causing blood and other fluid to leak into the macula. This is called wet macular degeneration.

This causes blurriness and vision loss in the centre area of your visual field. Unlike dry macular degeneration, this type can start suddenly and progress quickly.

4. Transient ischemic attack

A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a temporary stroke that lasts less than 24 hours. One of its symptoms may be blurred vision in one or both eyes.

5. Angle Closure Glaucoma

Angle-closure glaucoma occurs when the drainage system in the eye is blocked. In this situation, the pressure inside the eye can build up very quickly, causing redness, pain, and nausea.

Angle-closure glaucoma is an urgent medical condition, and treatment includes using eye drops to open the angle, decrease the pressure inside the eye and reduce the inflammation. The treat also involves laser surgery to remove a part of the bulged outer edge of the iris.

6. Eye Strain

Eye strain can occur when you stare at and focusing something for a long time without a break.

When it occurs as a result of focusing on an electronic device such as a computer or cellphone, it's sometimes called digital eye strain. Reading and driving, particularly at night and in poor weather, are two other factors.

7. Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is a popular as pink eye. Conjunctivitis is an infection of the outside lining of your eye. It's, usually caused by a virus but can also be caused by bacteria or allergies.

8. Corneal abrasion

Your cornea is the clear covering on the front of your eye. When it is scratched or injured, you may develop a corneal abrasion. In addition to blurry vision, you may feel like there is something in your eye

9. Hyphema

The dark red blood that collects in the front of your eyeball is called Hyphema. It is caused by bleeding that occurs after your eye is injured. It can become painful if it increases the pressure inside your eye.

10. High Blood Sugar

Very high blood sugar levels cause the lens of your eye to swell, which results in blurred vision.

The Bottom Line

Many things can cause your vision to become blurred suddenly. You should see your doctor about any sudden unexplained change in your vision.

However, If you think you have a detached retina, stroke, TIA, or wet macular degeneration are having a stroke, go to the near Emergency Room for immediate treatment to have the best outcome.
